Strengthening the NIS in Indonesia

Project Title: Evaluation of the Indonesian Science, Research and Technology Landscape to Strengthen the National Innovation System – Proyek Evaluasi Sains Teknologi untuk Pembangunan (PERISKOP)
Client: Ministry for Research and Technology (RISTEK)
Partner: University of Zurich, Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT), Indonesian Institute of Science (LIPI)

Similar to many other emerging economies, Indonesia sees one of its key challenges in the improvement of living conditions of its people. That requires strengthening the main backbone of Indonesian economy – the SME sector – despite the lack of adequate infrastructure and poor investment climate.

Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) from 2000 – 2004, the long-term project “PERISKOP – Evaluation of the Science, Research and Technology to strengthen the SMEs” has conducted a number of market demand studies with the goal to improve the competitiveness of Indonesian products on international and domestic markets.

These studies laid ground for targeted innovation and technology policies that facilitate transfer of R&D results between research institutions and SMEs in the country and spurge high-end entrepreneurship. The CCIS has further assisted in implementing concrete measures to decentralize innovation management, enhance technology transfer and ignite the cooperation between Indonesian and German government, research institutions and industries.
